Senior citizen rights
Maintenance, protection and priority services for elders.
The protections
- Maintenance — the Maintenance & Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 lets parents claim maintenance from children through the SDM-level Maintenance Tribunal — no lawyer needed.
- Property protection — a gift or transfer made on condition of care can be voided by the Tribunal if the elder is neglected.
- Eviction of abusers — elders can seek eviction of abusive occupants from their own home.
- Priority services — pension, banking priority, rail/air concessions and the 14567 Elderline helpline.
- In societies — RWAs should maintain senior-citizen registers and emergency contacts; our Senior Citizens Welfare committee works on exactly this.
