How to file an RTI

File a Right to Information application, step by step.

Five steps

  • 1. Identify the public authority and its Public Information Officer (PIO).
  • 2. Write your questions — specific, factual, one subject per application.
  • 3. Pay the fee — ₹10 for central authorities (IPO/DD/online at rtionline.gov.in); UP has its own portal for state bodies.
  • 4. Track the 30-day clock — PIOs must respond within 30 days (48 hours where life and liberty are involved).
  • 5. Appeal if needed — First Appeal to the senior officer within 30 days of the reply (or non-reply); Second Appeal to the Information Commission.

Tip: ask for certified copies of records rather than explanations — records are what authorities must provide.
