Know these rights

• Cognizable offences — police must register an FIR; refusal can be escalated to the SP in writing or to the Magistrate under BNSS.
• Zero FIR — any police station must register it regardless of jurisdiction and transfer it.
• Free copy — you are entitled to a free copy of the FIR immediately.
• e-FIR — UP Police allows online reporting for certain offences via the UPCOP app/portal.
• Women's complaints — can be recorded by/in presence of a woman officer, at a place of the complainant's convenience.
• Non-cognizable — get an NCR receipt; the Magistrate can direct investigation.
